How to Avoid These 3 Major Home Inspection Issues

Homes can hide a myriad of issues. Some are small and simple to fix, but others can cause severe damage that is expensive and time consuming to correct. The home inspection experts at InspectPros, Inc. want you to be prepared for some common problems that can wreak havoc on your home so that you can avoid the headache of costly repairs.

1. Mold Growth

Inside the house, mold growth can cause health problems and negatively impact air quality. The key to preventing mold growth is to control the moisture in your home. The bathroom typically has the most moisture in the house, so to minimize moisture, you can open windows and doors while bathing, wipe down the shower walls after use, and run the exhaust fan. Wet clothes can attract mold growth, so don’t leave them in the washer or hang wet clothes to dry inside unless you are using a well-ventilated room. Be sure to clean up water spills immediately, even on carpet, furniture, and clothes. And lastly, run a dehumidifier in your home to reduce moisture in the air.

2. Lead-Based Paint

You can’t exactly prevent the spread of lead-based paint, but it is important to know the dangers of lead-based paint and which homes are most likely to have it so that you can identify it and remove it before someone becomes ill. Lead paint is found in most homes that were built before 1978. It becomes dangerous when it starts to flake, peel, and becomes damaged or damp. Lead paint is also a hazard on spaces that children can chew or get a lot of access to such as windows and window sills, doors and door frames, stairs, railings, banisters, and porches. If you have lead paint in your house that is still in good shape, keep it dry, clean, and dust free.

3. Termites

Termites like moisture, so to prevent an infestation, ensure that your yard drains adequately. Also, check drainage pathways and gutter systems for pooling water. Remove debris from around your home, and store firewood away from the house. Keep wood around the property treated, repair cracks and holes in both concrete and wooden walls, and keep everything painted or otherwise treated. You can apply special paints and stains to repel termites, or (if undertaking a new project) start with termite-proof materials.
