The photo shows typical water heater requirements including two straps, elevation off floor of garage, protective bollards, TPR valve with discharge pipe to the exterior, Click on image for larger view.
When gas water heaters are installed inside a home and there is no easy way to route the discharge pipe to the exterior, a common solution is to install a Watts 210 valve which shuts off the gas to the tank if over temperature or excessive pressure is detected.
TPR valve discharge lines should be terminated in an approved location, use metal or approved plastic (NOT PVC), have no threads on the end and terminate 6" to 24" off the ground pointing downward.
